I’ve been booking professional stand-up comedians for corporate events since 2003. Tell me about your audience, event and budget, and I’ll recommend comedians.

I’m Shaun Eli. I worked in marketing, corporate finance and portfolio & risk management for almost twenty years while building up my TV comedy writing and stand-up comedy credentials. I went to Wharton, so I may understand your business. Most of the comics I work with have had professional careers prior to comedy- we’re former attorneys, engineers, architects, bankers, teachers, advertising executives. I can find the ideal comedians for your event, super-funny people who understand your business.             I’ve got questions

Trusted by organizations including
Novartis   Microsoft   U.S. Army War College   Novo Nordisk   Swiss Re   Charles Schwab   Armed Forces Entertainment   Foundation for Special Surgery   Erickson Living   Yodlee

“Thank you so much for your help organizing Carmen and Dan for our event. Their communication ahead of the event was fantastic and our crowd LOVED both of them so much.
This was the first time our teams have had a Sales Kickoff like this. It was the best experience and I will fully use you and your team again and I pass along our highest recommendation.
Thank you again, truly appreciate all three of you!”
Kara Hall, Internal Communications Manager, Rightworks

“Shaun Eli did an amazing job performing virtually for our department. He had us laughing from the start, engaging with the audience and kept us laughing the whole time. And after he finished he told us stories from his career and answered our questions, without ever stopping being entertaining. I imagine it’s not easy to make a small audience of only a dozen people laugh on a screen but he was wonderful!”
Mike Savage, Managing Director, Charles Schwab

Thank you Shaun for providing Cory Kahaney for our holiday party. She was fantastic! Tailored the performance to our group, and just the perfect edge for us. People could not stop talking about it. She made our party truly special. Our first time having a comedian for our company, and it certainly won’t be the last!”
Lee Wexler, Principal, Extremely Heavy Inc. (financial technology company)

“Shaun, Many thanks again! The team really enjoyed your performance and deeply appreciated the additional time you spent sharing your personal story and perspective.”
Jeremy Sohn, VP, Global Head of Digital BD&L, Partnerships, & Innovation, Novartis

“Shaun was SUPER. Not only did he do a phenomenal job emceeing our corporate function but with his corporate background he completely understood our complicated business and what we needed from an emcee for the launch of our unique event. And after the event he took the initiative to stick around and discuss the logistics with our participants so he could make suggestions to make the event even better the next time we do it.”
Kayvan Farzaneh, Senior Manager, VSC Consulting

Don’t try to choose from thousands of comedians. Because you really can’t.

Tell me about your event. I’ll tell you whom I would choose. You don’t have to know which comedian(s) to hire. Tell me:

    • What kind of event you’re planning
    • What your company and department do
    • Who’s in the audience
    • Where your event is, and when
    • Your approximate budget
    • If you’re looking for someone with TV credits (still affordable) or name recognition (this can be expensive)
    • Anything else you think we should know. Don’t be afraid to ask us lots of questions. I learn from that, and I’ll have questions for you.

I’ve got questions

I’ll recommend the comedians who are the best fit for your event.

If indeed comedy is right for your event. If it isn’t, I will tell you. Stand-up needs a seated, attentive audience- if your guests will be chatting over cocktails, maybe you want background music?

I’m a comedy specialist (and a working comedian), not a cog in a giant talent agency with comedians as one category among dozens.

I work with a select group of comedians, and I personally know the performers I recommend. I do shows with them. I travel with them. They come to my barbecues (even the vegans).

I know their material, their style, their strengths, and how they work with different audiences. I see them perform regularly, so I know that their acts are current. And I know how to structure a lineup, so nobody’s material overlaps with anyone else’s.

I work with a boutique group of hand-picked professional corporate comedians. Not hundreds and certainly not thousands. If somebody says they work with thousands of comedians have they ever seen them on stage? Have they even met them?

At The Ivy League of Comedy, I’m the only person who answers the phone and the only person selecting your comedians. We’re not a rotating desk at a big agency where you might not even talk to the same person twice.

With me, you get a curator, not a catalogue.

Beware of the “booking agent”

A talent agent finds work and negotiates deals on behalf of the entertainer, their client. Talent agencies are licensed and regulated by the state, and can charge up to 10%. That’s what most people think of when they hear the term “agent.”

A “booking agent” is different. They want you to think they’re talent agents, but they work for themselves, acting as a middleman with no regulation on what they can charge, and they may not even tell the artist what they’re getting paid. It’s not unheard of for a booking agent to charge $5000 for an entertainer and pay the entertainer $2500, or even $500. Speakers bureaus operate a bit differently, with a standard commission usually between 25% and 30%, sometimes as high as 50%.

We’re not an agency. With my industry knowledge and experience I very often book comedians at a much lower total cost than you would get by direct contact, and certainly better than a booking agent. Comics prefer to work with me because I handle all the logistical details and other business issues so they just have to show up and be funny. No, I don’t keep most of the money for myself. And unlike a “booking agent” I have no contract with any artist that prohibits them from discussing payment terms with you.

So, what’s this gonna cost us?
+

Typical factors: The comedian’s experience, TV credits and name recognition; audience size; and how far to travel (almost all of us are in New York or California- I’ll quote a flat fee that includes travel costs). Email or call with your information, ask your questions (I’ll have a few too) and I’ll quote a price. For a ballpark price range, locally for a small non-profit maybe $750, but for a large corporate group, say a 250 person corporate sales conference that involves travel and an overnight stay, figure $5,000–$10,000 for a comedian with 20+ years of experience and a couple of national television appearances.   More Corporate Comedy FAQs

Why You Should Have Comedy At Your Event

There’s no rule that everything in business has to be serious. We’ve done shows for serious enterprises like pharmaceutical companies, the military, firefighters, cancer charities, hedge funds…

What does “clean” mean to us?

  • No profanity
  • No explicit sexual humor
  • No politics (unless you’re a political organization and that’s what you want)
  • No picking on the audience, no roasting (we hate that- we’ve been in the audience too)
  • No jokes based on perpetuating stereotypes (that’s cheap and insulting)
  • And most importantly, if there is something you’re concerned about, tell us. In other words, what does it mean to you, our client?

Shaun Eli on stage at Cape Town Comedy ClubShaun Eli

Wharton-educated former banker. Great for financial services companies. Also for anything to do with boating or aviation. Good for mental health events- Shaun has a master’s degree in applied positive psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.
Also one of the best comedians around for virtual shows.

Ross Bennett

Ross has done a lot of shows for medical & dental groups, substance abuse organizations, Christian groups, and is especially fun for older employees (he’s great for young people too, but especially good with the maybe-harder-to-make-laugh-hard older folks).

Ophira Eisenberg

Ophira had her own show “Ask Me Another” on NPR. She’s especially good for shows for nurses and hospitals, women’s groups and for cancer charities. (this is not me being sexist- this is what she told me)

Wali Collins

Former architect and the best corporate emcee in the business. Letterman’s former warm-up comic. Wali has done a lot of shows for companies in the consumer products, telecom and food service industries.

Comedian Liz Miele standing on a dark NYC streetLiz Miele

Great for shows for the tech industry, also great for the younger crowd and for animal and veterinary organizations. Liz loves cats.

Carmen Lynch

Carmen is great for Spain/Spanish groups (she’s bilingual and performs in both Spanish and English), psychology and wellness.

Al Lubel headshotAl Lubel

Great for law firm events (Al is a former trial lawyer). Quirky but just about THE funniest comedian around.

Myq Kaplan

A master of wordplay, from a guy with a master’s degree in linguistics.

Clean comedian Tony Deyo on stage, wearing a suit and holding a microphoneTony Deyo

Tony is great for shows for the music and education organizations. Music education too, obviously. He’s a former professional musician.

Clayton Fletcher headshotClayton Fletcher

A hilarious comedian who’s also a professional poker player (you’ve been warned). Great for pharmaceutical, financial services, insurance and other industries.

Steve Mittleman

Hilarious, and a trained auctioneer. Steve is particularly experienced in shows for health events such as plant-based/vegan/holistic/dieting.

Corporate Comedy Show FAQ

What does a corporate comedian cost? What is the average cost or fee range to hire a professional corporate comedian? What’s a reasonable budget for entertainment at a corporate event?
+

The cost varies depending on the comedian, the client, the location and the size of the audience. The Ivy League of Comedy‘s Shaun Eli is about the least-expensive skilled corporate comedian around. Locally for a small non-profit maybe $750, but for a large group, say a 250 person corporate sales conference that involves driving to, and an overnight stay, $5,000–$10,000 is a reasonable estimation for a comedian with a couple of television appearances. You may find someone to do it for $500 but you really do get what you pay for. Someone willing to work for $500 is someone moonlighting, not a full-time pro comedian. Note that it’s only a small fraction of comedians who can do a clean and corporate-appropriate half-hour to forty-five minutes. And your corporate event is no place for amateurs.

Musicians are less expensive, but you can’t compare comedians to musicians. There are a lot of very talented musicians and they could be pretty young because they started when they were six. Comedians start as adults and have to perform thousands, yes, THOUSANDS of times to be skilled enough to take on the challenge of performing in front of people who have probably spent the whole day listening to other people talk. The audience wants to go home, to the bar, or back to their hotel room. You want a comedian who knows how to deal with just about anything without picking on the audience or ignoring what went wrong. As an example, if someone drops a tray of food, the audience loses focus and the comedian has to know how to get them back. Or someone at your event had too much to drink and won’t shut up. What works with hecklers in a comedy club may not be appropriate in a corporate setting. And there’s no bouncer to throw them out.

What factors influence a comedian’s booking fee (travel, length of set, level of experience, name recognition)?
+

How far they have to travel (does it require a flight and overnight stay?), their level of experience and how famous they are. Someone that most people have heard of will be way more expensive but probably no funnier than the comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy (and often less funny, as they rely on their fame, rather than writing new material and honing their jokes).

Will you tell us if comedy isn’t right for our event?
+

Yes. It’s my job to know when comedy is right, and when it isn’t. If I don’t think that stand-up comedy is what’s best for your event, I’ll tell you. I’d rather have an honest conversation upfront than book something that doesn’t reflect well for you or me.

How far in advance do we need to book a corporate comedian for our annual conference or holiday party?
+

In general we recommend 3-4 months but The Ivy League of Comedy can also handle last-minute bookings, so please reach out and ask. If it’s way last-minute, call us at 1 (914) 487-3866, don’t text or email.

What does the contract look like regarding travel expenses, riders, and cancellation policies?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy prefers to quote an all-in price so you don’t have to worry about travel expenses. Our rider is pretty simple. Regarding cancellation, if it’s weather that’s no problem at all (well, it kind of stinks, but we deal with it). If you need to cancel for your own reasons, if it’s far enough in advance it may be no problem or we may keep the deposit. If it’s close to the show date, you might be stuck, although anything we can save from canceling flights or hotels would go back to you. It really depends on the comic. Some will say they didn’t have anything else for that date, so it’s no loss. Others have passed up other opportunities, or they just want to get paid for having planned for the event. As the guy in charge here, I’m fine with giving back my portion, but that’s almost nothing.

Can your comedians do Q&A?
+

We at The Ivy League of Comedy have done Q&A with the audience for over two decades— a lot of the comedians who are doing that now learned it from us. So yes, absolutely. Most of us love doing Q&A because it gives us an opportunity to demonstrate our ability to be spontaneously funny. And it’s always nice when someone’s curious about you.

Do you have references? Testimonials?
+

Sure— take a look at our Testimonials page and have a look at some of the press we’ve gotten.

Can you recommend a comedian who is clean and won’t offend anyone in a corporate setting? How do I find a funny keynote speaker who isn’t offensive?
+

Shaun Eli’s The Ivy League of Comedy are experts at arranging corporate comedy shows and are happy to answer any questions you might have. Their comedians average well over two decades of experience as clean corporate stand-up comedians.

How do I ensure the humor is appropriate for a mixed audience of executives, entry-level staff, and clients?
+

The best way is to work with a company like The Ivy League of Comedy that are experts at corporate comedy events. We also do shows for houses of worship, so you know that our material will be corporate-appropriate.

What is the standard running time for a corporate comedy performance?
+

Typically we at The Ivy League of Comedy recommend 20-30 minutes. If it’s just the show— not part of a larger event like a conference, but just maybe dinner and client entertainment— we recommend 2-3 comedians and 60-90 minutes. But it’s your show— we can make recommendations but what do you want?

Does the comedian also act as an emcee, host, or auctioneer for our awards gala or fundraiser? Can you moderate a panel?
+

The comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy are experts at acting as emcees or event hosts. As far as acting as an auctioneer, if you need a comedian with extensive experience as a professional auctioneer, we can provide that too. Also, at least some of us have extensive experience moderating corporate panels. Feel free to ask for specific details.

What kind of audio/visual (A/V) equipment does a corporate comedian require—lighting, microphones, staging?
+

Oh, we’re way easy, says The Ivy League of Comedy’s Shaun Eli. We need a decent sound system with a hand-held microphone (and a back-up mic). We don’t need projectors or screens. A stage and stage lighting are ideal but not required.

Do you handle virtual or hybrid comedy shows for remote teams, and how do those work? Who are the best comedians for virtual corporate events?
+

We do these shows. The Ivy League of Comedy’s comedians are experts at virtual shows, as we’ve learned the differences between in-person and virtual shows and have learned how to change our performance to accommodate the differences. And, unlike many comedians, we’re very happy to do virtual shows (which are also much less expensive for you).

Who are the best corporate comedians for a sales kickoff?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy’s founder and CEO Shaun Eli majored in marketing at Wharton, so he’s probably a really good comedian for a sales event. If he’s not available he’s happy to recommend a number of his hilarious colleagues.

Can you recommend clean comedians for a healthcare conference?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy’s comedians are excellent for health care conferences, for medical associations and for pharmaceutical companies. Founder Shaun Eli studied epidemiology and has a master’s degree in applied positive psychology from Penn.

How can a comedian help kick off a conference with high energy or wrap up a multi-day event on a high note?
+

That’s exactly what comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy do— we make people laugh and they leave with fond memories of your event. Many of us worked in industry, finance or law before becoming comedians so we’ve been to our fair share of conferences as attendees.

What is the difference between hiring a funny keynote speaker and a traditional stand-up comedian for a corporate event?
+

The comedian’s funnier. The comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy have one goal— to make the audience laugh. A lot. A keynote speaker may have a message, and that reduces the funny. We just want to make you laugh.

Can the comedian tailor their set for an international audience or multicultural corporate event? Can you write custom material for our group? Do corporate comedians customize their material based on our company culture, industry, or inside jokes? Can a comedian weave our corporate messaging, product launch, or annual themes into their routine?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy‘s comedians can and often do, but it’s really not necessary. Most of us have at least a little material that can be adapted. If we open with a joke or two about your company, your products, your industry, or office life in general, and then towards the end we do another joke or two on the same topic, the audience will have the impression that the whole show was about them (yeah, it’s weird). If you do want specific topics covered, you need to give us enough notice to create new material. Real comedians write their own material— there’s not some master joke book we peruse to find jokes about various topics.

What’s the difference between a club comic and a corporate comedian?
+

A lot. A club comic is used to a younger audience, one that’s probably consumed some alcohol, doesn’t care if the comedy’s dirty and isn’t sitting with their boss. So the club comic’s material might be about video games or drug use. A clean corporate comedian is unlikely to talk about those things at a corporate event. A good corporate comedian, like those from The Ivy League of Comedy, have extensive corporate comedy experience and their material will be appropriate for your event. Many of us also worked in industry, finance or law before becoming comedians.

We’re having an awards banquet. Should we hire a comedian or an emcee?
+

That depends. Do you like to laugh? The comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy are experts at emceeing corporate events. And maybe the people who didn’t win any awards could use some cheering up!

What questions should I ask before hiring a comedian?
+

What sorts of topics do you talk about, and what do you avoid? How long have you been a full-time professional comedian (or start with— are you a full-time pro comic)? What does “clean comedy” mean to you? The people from The Ivy League of Comedy are happy to spend significant time on the phone with you to make sure you’re super-comfortable with our shows.

This other company on the web claims 2000 comedians on their roster. You have around thirty. Doesn’t that make them better?
+

No, it makes them far worse. First of all, there aren’t 2000 quality corporate comedians in the country. Far from it. Secondly, how could they know much about that many comics? Have they even seen them in front of an audience? Any audience at all? How could they possibly know which comedians keep their material up to date, or what they talk about? The Ivy League of Comedy founder and CEO Shaun Eli is, first and foremost, a comedian. He’s working with his colleagues at theatres, at charity events and at other venues. He knows what they talk about and how they’re doing. He’s not some guy sitting in a remote office who gets paid just for sending people out. And that booker? Could be keeping half or more of your money for himself. Yes, some of them are that greedy. So that $5000 you’re paying? You’re getting a $750 comic, and the booker owns a nice boat.

Who are comedians that perform for Fortune 500 companies?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy provides dozens of comedians with experience performing for large corporations.

How do I convince my boss that a comedian is worth the cost?
+

We don’t know your boss, but perhaps ask the boss if they want your attendees to leave happy and be talking fondly about the event for days or weeks afterwards, says The Ivy League of Comedy’s Shaun Eli.

The comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy will not pick on or embarrass anyone, we won’t be dirty, won’t tell political jokes, will not roast anyone, nor tell anyone else’s jokes (we all write our own original material). And we won’t go over our time— we all know how to tell time, we know roughly how long our act is, and many of us use pocket timers (or our cell phone sitting on a stool on stage) to keep track of time.

We’re also on time. We don’t want anyone staring at their watch or phone and worrying. Sometimes we’ll fly in the day before just to avoid any travel issues (and, frankly, so we don’t have to wake up too early on the day of the performance).

And there are no money surprises— we prefer to build in our travel costs so you pay the price we quote. Two caveats— if you want us to provide a sound system we may be able to do that, but we charge extra. And if you want to pay with a credit card, we add in the 3.3% fee that we have to pay.

What are the biggest mistakes companies make when booking comedy?
+

Not booking a clean corporate comedian like those from The Ivy League of Comedy. Not asking if there are any hidden costs, like travel. Not discussing, in advance and preferably before booking, if there are any specific topics to be avoided.

Asking the comedian to pick on someone, even the CEO, is generally a bad idea. We’re happy to explain why.

We’re an accounting firm/law firm/Wall Street firm. Will a comedian make fun of our employees?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy specifically hates this! We don’t view picking on the audience as good for us, or even good for the art of stand-up comedy in general. When I (Shaun Eli, the founder) started in comedy, I’d ask people if they’d been to a comedy show. A common answer was that they used to go, but they stopped when a comedian picked on them or on their friend. So we don’t do this.

Do corporate comedians work clean?
+

That’s the whole point of us— to give you a clean show. That’s why The Ivy League of Comedy was founded.

Can you recommend female corporate comedians?
+

The Ivy League of Comedy has several hilarious female corporate comedians. They’re not easy to find. Only a small percentage of pro comics are corporate comedians, and women are only around a third of the comedians (and probably an even lower percentage of corporate comedians).

The Ivy League of Comedy’s founder wrote an op-ed piece about women in comedy, and, two decades ago, did a study on the number of women in comedy.

Can you do an R rated type show for us for our corporate event?
+

We can but we really don’t want to. There is nothing inherently funnier about a dirty show. Our instructions to comedians in The Ivy League of Comedy are clear: Our Shows Are Clean. We’ve been at other people’s shows (not ours) where a comedian has asked the audience “We’re all adults, okay if I get a little dirty?” Nobody in the audience is going to single themselves out by saying no. Some people think dirty jokes are funnier (they’re not, they’re just dirtier) and they’ll be enthusiastic. After the show the comedian will make excuses: “Well, I felt out the audience by getting edgier and they were fine. I even asked them and they said it was okay.” Our instructions to them are clear— Do Not Do That. Even if the person seemingly in charge says it’s okay. It’s not.

We pride ourselves on our professionalism, creativity and originality, not on making fun of your company or CEO. Will we make fun of your CEO if you ask us to? No. We think that’s a bad idea. Unless he or she specifically asks us to, privately, we shy away from that. Very few people actually enjoy being made fun of. If he or she wants to do something to seem more relatable we can write a few quick and funny self-deprecating remarks for him/her instead.

What other questions might people have for a corporate comedian?
+

Comedians from The Ivy League of Comedy can do multiple shows. We offer significant discounts to non-profit organizations. Most of us have performed internationally so we’re used to diverse audiences and don’t tend to have cultural references not easily understood by most. And even for those who haven’t performed much overseas, those of us based in New York City are used to a lot of foreign audiences.

We have a lot of experience with a lot of different industries.

We do recommend stand-up comedy for ages 14 and up, so if there are little children at your event please provide a different activity for them.

We strongly prefer to perform indoors, for all sorts of reasons. But we can also do outdoor events.
